The definitive Miata history

This is the complete history of the third generation Mazda MX-5, the iconic Japanese roadster. Researched and written in Japan with the full co-operation of the Mazda factory, this book covers every one of the MX-5 'Mk3' model types in definitive detail, and in all major world markets.

Successful immediately, the MX-5 – also known as the Miata or Roadster – re-invented the affordable lightweight convertible, a breed many though extinct as the 1990s drew near. It spawned many imitators, yet remains the best selling two-seat sports car in history, now having been in production for more than 30 years. New generations continue to follow the concept of the original, much to the delight of fans around the globe, and with all NC series model types and all major world markets covered, this is a truly comprehensive and deeply researched book, lavishly illustrated with contemporary photography sourced from around the world, including reproductions of original period sales literature.

MX-5 origins

Starting with a brief history of Mazda from its early 20th century beginnings, and including its most iconic and significant models, the evolution of Mazda into the company we are familiar with today is revealed along with the social and economic factors that shaped it.

The origins and underpinnings of the MX-5 are explored, from the models that influenced the Miata, and the first generation NA series MK-5 introduced in February 1989 at the Chicago Auto Show, to the second generation MB series of 1997 to 2004, and beyond.

Jinba-ittai

The second generation NB series MX-5 had been on the market only four years when work started on the MX-5 NC series. Unlike the previous NB series, the third generation NC models were designed from the ground up: virtually everything was new compared to the outgoing model.

As with the earlier generations of MX-5, the Japanese expression Jinba-ittai – 人馬一体 – was paramount, and indoctrinated into every one of the 100 person development team. Jinba-ittai, which describes the unity of a horse and rider as one harmonious entity, became Mazda's design philosophy; to create that feeling of oneness between the driver and the car.

Conception to reception to renewal

The Book of the Mazda MX-5 'Mk3' reveals the fascinating behind-the-scenes history of the MX-5 NC series in detail, from its Ibuki concept car design cues to the evolving Jinba-ittai concept applied to the NC, and the multitude of changes that were applied to every aspect of the car, from visual design and safety, to powertrain and handling.

Along with a wealth of technical details covering everything from mechanical specifications and changes, to colour, trim and equipment options, Brian covers the MX-5 NC's global launch campaign, as well as how it was initially received by the press and the motoring public, and it's eventual replacement after ten years of production by the ND series MX-5.

An unrivalled history and authenticity guide

Spanning 10 years of production, the MX-5 NC's history is long and varied, encompassing everything from minor face-lifts to hard-top versions: every change throughout the NC model's life is documented. From the earliest models, to the first brand-new NCs, and with sales performance and manufacturing figures in the major global markets of Japan, Europe, USA, Australia and New Zealand, this book reveals the full evolution of the MK-5 across the world

Including details of the Special Edition models, such as the ZSport, Icon, Miyako – even the Mazda-commissioned competition variant of the Jota for racing in in the 2014 Nürburgring 24 Hours – this an unrivalled guide to the car's history.

The Book of the Mazda MX-5 'Mk3' reveals the entire history of the MX-5 NC in unprecedented and forensic detail, all extensively illustrated with reproductions of literature, contemporary prices, concept images, and diagrams.

Not only is this the perfect companion to Brian's earlier works The book of the Mazda MX-5 Miata: The 'Mk1' NA series 1988 to 1997 New Second Edition and The book of the Mazda MX-5 Miata: The 'Mk2' NB series 1997 to 2004, but a must-have book for all Mazda MX-5 enthusiasts and owners, and an invaluable authenticity guide to the third incarnation of the world's most successful two-seat sports car ever.
