Sometimes even dinosaurs find it difficult to fit in – Alice discovers where her place in the world is!
This is a heart-warming children’s picture book about a young autistic dinosaur called Alice. Alice has always struggled to fit in with the other dinosaurs, but with the help of her new friend, Alvin, she finally discovers her place – and realises that being different is good!
Alice is finding it hard to make friends at her school, and we learn about some of the difficulties that Alice has – such as finding busy places scary – but also about some of the positives of having autism, like having a good memory. Along the way, Alice meets an older Aspiesaurus called Alvin, who helps her to see her differences as a good thing. With Alvin’s help, Alice soon has the confidence to befriend other dinosaurs, and uses her amazing brain to help them.
Highly appealing to children, Alice’s story draws on Lucy Martin’s own experiences of autism, and gives children with an autistic spectrum disorder a positive and relevant message, that’s easy and fun to read, and full of colourful hand-drawn illustrations of dinosaurs.
With around 1 in every 160 children diagnosed with autism, a rate that’s increasing all the time, millions of children worldwide need support with their autism. Exploring autism from an autistic person’s perspective, and focussing on positivity and embracing our differences, Different is good can greatly benefit children who have autism themselves, helping explain why they may feel different, and reassuring them that theirs and others’ differences are a GOOD thing.
All kids love dinosaurs …
… and this book has LOTS of them!
